My first ever natural hair event was a success! I was excited and nervous to create my very own natural hair event, but I decided to just go for it! So if any of you would like to create your own natural hair meetup, my advice is to just go for it! You will definitely have fun and meet some new friends along the way!
I was motivated to start my own natural hair event after I looked in my bathroom and saw that I had so many products that I didn’t use lying around. I did not want to throw them away or keep them lying around in my house, so I decided to search on Google and my favorite event site, Eventbrite, for “product swaps” in the NYC area and Brooklyn. I found a couple of product swaps in the area, but to my dismay, they already passed. So I had two options: wait for another product swap event to happen or create my own. I’m so glad that I chose to do the latter! Since it’s still summertime (and I love summer), I decided to make it a picnic as well! I spread the word by creating an Eventbrite page, Facebook event page, and promoting it in Facebook Natural Hair groups and through Instagram.
RSVPs for my event sold out in less than a week, so I was excited to host it on Saturday. I got to the park a little bit before 12, and a couple of girls showed up with their friends. It was less than I expected since 19 people RSVP’d, but I was excited to get the ball rolling.
Here is the schedule for my event:
12:00-12:15 pm- Meet Up At the park (We will start heading to our picnic spot at 12:15 pm)
12:30-1:30 pm- Meet, Greet, and Eat! Meet the beautiful naturalistas as you snack on some picnic goodies!
1:30 pm-2:30 pm- Swap Time! Get out those products and swap some oldies for some goodies!
2:30 pm-3:30 pm- Game Time! Relax on the sand while playing some of your favorite card and board games!
3:30 pm-4:00 pm- It’s time to leave! But don’t forget to add some of your new friends on Instagram!
The event went really well! It ran very smoothly, and not only was I able to get rid of all of my old products and replace them with some new products, but I was able to meet some new friends and have fun! Here are some pictures from the event:
The natural hair products that I received from the swap (and I am excited to try!) are the following:
I love this product! It is thick in consistency without coating the hair and it is already a staple in my natural hair routine. If you have not already tried it, I definitely recommend it!
I have tried a few Carol’s Daughter product samples that I received from CurlFest before, but I’m excited to receive a full sized product. This is very thick in consistency and I wonder how it would work in the long run.
While my go-to low poo is the Shea Moisture Coconut Hibiscus Curling Shampoo, I am excited to try a new Low Poo for my hair. This product is sulfate-free and I wonder if it would compete with my fave.
I have never heard of this brand before, but I am excited to try a new conditioner aside from some of my faves (Herbal Essences Hello Hydration, Aussie Moist, TRESemme Naturals, and SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Conditioner.). Also, it is silicone-free!
Of course, I would choose some more Shea Moisture! I have never tried this product before, but I have tried a few other gel creams in my hair and they worked well, aside from leaving my fine hair a bit crunchy at first. I love the Curl Enhancing Smoothie from Shea Moisture and I wonder if this would be able to compete with the smoothie. Plus, it smells delicious!
Actually, this is just a sample product, but I heard of the brand before and I am excited to try out their products for the first time. I hope it works like the smoothie or other curl enhancement products I have tried. If so, I just might buy the full-sized product!
And last but not least!
Nya Bijou Products- Mango Butter and Sugar Scrub
One of the girls who came brought her own homemade products, including travel-sized mango butter, a great alternative to shea butter and cocoa butter, and a sugar scrub, which smells delicious and just like brown sugar! She gave out free samples to all of the attendees! I am always excited to try out homemade and natural products, so I definitely recommend. You can connect with her and buy her products through her Instagram: @iamnyeeka.
Thank you so much for reading! I will create a product review for the products I received from the swap soon. Bye for now!
