Mother’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. On most holidays, such as Thanksgiving, birthdays, and even Christmas, moms are running around trying to make the holidays perfect for everyone else. Mother’s Day is one of the only days that mothers can sit down and relax after spending so much time trying to balance motherhood, work, and social life! Even though you have to just go back to being supermom the very next day! Even if you are not able to go out to eat or go to the spa, Mother’s Day is a great holiday to spend at home being pampered by the people who love you the most! Read on to find ideas that you can do from home; just let your family take the lead from there!
Having a spa day at home is a great way to save money from going to the spa and to spend mother and daughter time. Put on some comfy robes and have a relaxing day at home. Some great treatments to do with your daughters include manicures and pedicures, facials, and chilling in the pool. After dark, you can always continue your spa date night by giving each other massages and having a steamy soak in the shower or hot tub! Do you want to make your spa day extra fun? Purchase a subscription box such as the Black Girl Magic Box’s Mother’s Day Box here.
Do you have a crafty kid on your hands? If so, a paint party is a perfect way to boost your child’s creativity. With a toddler or preschooler, you can paint whatever you want with your child. As your child gets older, you can choose a painting to replicate that you and your child can both draw! Add some sparkling apple juice and refreshments and you have a kid-friendly paint party! If you would like to have a paint party date night after dark or grown children, swap the sparkling apple juice for wine. You could purchase a complete paint party set on Amazon here.
Even if you can’t go out to eat, you can bring brunch to your home. Staple brunch foods such as pancakes, waffles, french toast, eggs, and avocado toast are simple enough for you (or even your husband or young children!) to prepare. Delish has lots of great recipes that you could prepare with your family for Mother’s Day. If you don’t feel like preparing anything on your special day, you can always support a local business by ordering brunch to go!
Breakfast in Bed
Do you want to avoid the daunting task of making breakfast for the entire family? Drop a hint to your family to bring you breakfast in bed! Let your husband take over breakfast duty with the kids to make you breakfast that you can eat immediately after waking up! Now hopefully, they can make you something more elaborate than cold cereal or packaged yogurt!
You prepared lunch for the family at home. Now what? Why not lay out a blanket and enjoy your lunch in the backyard with your family if it is a beautiful day? Delish has some tasty picnic lunch ideas listed here. If you don’t have a backyard or it is a cool or rainy day, you can bring your picnic indoors! All you have to do is lay a blanket on the living room floor instead of the grass. Your kids will enjoy it just as much as a traditional picnic!
Mother’s Day is a great time for the whole family to get involved in the kitchen. Find something that all of you agree on and start cooking. Simple child-friendly options that adults also love include making your own pizza, macaroni and cheese, and homemade french fries and burgers! If you have room for dessert afterward, you guys can even bake a cake for dessert. World’s Best Mom icing anyone?
Mother’s Day Themed Photoshoot
Mother’s Day is about just that, the pure and unedited essence of motherhood. This is a great time for your partner or friend to go behind the lens to take candid pictures of you and your children just enjoying each other’s company. If you would like something that is more professional than candid shots, you can purchase or create a homemade backdrop or just take a picture in your home somewhere nice like the staircase, fireplace, backyard, or front yard. You can create beautiful momentums to hang around your house, no professional photographer needed!
Mother’s Day Themed Storytime
A great way to celebrate Mother’s Day with your children is by reading stories that are centered around mothers. The good thing is that there are many books dedicated to mothers. A great book for babies is Everything is Mama by Jimmy Fallon, which focuses on the common first word. Llama Llama Red Pajama is a great choice for toddlers since it teaches young children to wait patiently for their mother. A Chair for My Mother is a more sophisticated choice that suits older children better for Mother’s Day.
Watch A Movie
After the kids finally go to bed, it’s a good time for you to just turn on Netflix or On-Demand and watch some movies. Luckily there are a lot of choices for movies that explore the relationship between mother and daughter. You can catch classics, such as Mamma Mia, 00’s teen movies, such as Freaky Friday, newer movies, such as Charlize Theron’s Tully, and the kid-appropriate Brave if you have a tween who is still somehow up. What all of these movies have in common is that they emphasize no matter what type of mother you are, it is still the hardest job in the world.
Do Arts and Crafts
When your kid is too young to buy you an elaborate Mother’s Day gift, the best gift that you can possibly get is a homemade card. Pull out the markers, crayons, and paper for your kid to scribble on for you to keep and cherish forever and ever! Have a baby who is too young to even scribble? Use their handprint to create the perfect card for your first ever Mother’s Day gift!
No matter what extra plans and activities other people make and incorporate you in, Mother’s Day is your day first! This means that if you would like to just spend the whole day doing nothing much more than sleeping in and watch trashy reality TV for the entire day, then you can do just that. Arguably this might be one of the best ways to spend Mother’s Day! Let your spouse pick up the slack and prepare the kids’ meals, play with them, and clean up after them and see what it is like in your shoes for just one day. Just hope that the place doesn’t look like it got hit by a tornado the very next day!
