When one of my friends invited me to POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND, I was excited to attend. After all, POPSUGAR is a website that is dedicated to fashion, beauty, health and wellness, and the latest news about celebrities. Plus, I saw my friend’s Instagram posts from the last POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND and the event looked like a blast! However, I was a bit nervous about bringing my two-year-old son to the event. After all, while POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND is a vibrant event with playground and carnival themes, it was not exactly geared towards kids, especially not toddler boys. However, my friend insisted that the event was kid-friendly (they even had a wristband especially for children six and under). So I decided to grab my ticket for 25% off when I had the chance! Luckily I did because the event was totally worth it! Here is my comprehensive review on POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND’s various experiences:
Main Stage- 5 out of 5 stars
POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND had many celebrities as guests this year, including Mandy Moore, Camila Mendes (who plays Veronica in Riverdale!), Issa Rae, Chrissy Teigen, Amanda Seyfried and more! I attended POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND on Sunday, so I got to see both Issa Rae and Chrissy Teigen on the Main Stage. When I got to Issa Rae’s presentation five minutes in advance, most of the seats were full, but I managed to snag a seat that was near two friends. It was difficult watching the presentations with a very active toddler so I had to use snacks, juice, and books to keep him entertained.
Issa Rae’s FAQ was interesting and funny (after all, she is the writer behind the hilarious comedy series, Insecure!). She spoke with the Executive Producer of Insecure and friend, Amy Aniobi, about her career, self-care, and other relatable topics.
I got to Chrissy Teigen’s performance about five minutes in advance as well (Joshua was a bit distracted by the colorful bath bombs by Lush) but the crowd was so large that there were no seats available and many people were standing up. However, the crowd cleared up as time went on and we were able to snag seats later on. Chrissy Teigen and her BFF, Jen Atkin spoke about Chrissy’s career as well as her family life. Chrissy Teigen’s three-year-old daughter, Luna, even made a brief appearance on stage!
Overall, the interviews were both inspiring and entertaining. If I had got there a bit earlier, I would have been able to get a better seat closer to the front of the main stage, or even get a chance to meet the celebrities. Maybe next year.
The Playground- 4.5 out of 5 stars
The main attraction of POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND is the adult playground that brings millennials back to their childhood days. The cloud-shaped swings were perfect for my son, who was very excited for his turn on the swings (even though he is usually more of a slide type of guy). The pastel-colored jungle gym sculpture was also perfect for photo ops (not pictured). The only reason who I gave it minus half star is that I thought that POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND would bring back the ball pit, but they didn’t this year, which was a bit disappointing. I guess that it was a bit more unsanitary than the swings. Unfortunately, I missed my opportunity to take pictures in the ball pit after 2018. So the minus half star was a personal problem, not a POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND problem.
Sugar Studio- N/A
Unfortunately, I did not make it to the Sugar Studio this year. A lot of the other programs that I attended overlapped with the Sugar Studio schedule. Maybe next year.
Samsung Galaxy Soul Space- 5 out of 5 stars
The Samsung Soul Space was a great part of POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND. Not only was it a great place to charge your phone. It was also a great place to listen to talks, relax, meditate, and take yoga classes. I attended a yoga class and a meditation class at the Samsung Soul Space. Unfortunately, both were an epic fail because my energetic toddler was in no mood to relax or sit down. He also did not want to stay in his stroller without a fight! If I go next year sans toddler, I will definitely try out the yoga and meditation classes again.
Beauty Carnival- 5 out of 5 stars
The Beauty Carnival was one of my favorite parts of POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND. First of all, it had so many great photo opportunities. Second of all, they were giving away many great freebies. I grabbed Nature Made freebies such as Vitamin C and Hair, Skin, and Nail supplements if you are a slight health nut like me. Third of all, it was literally like a carnival. My toddler really enjoyed playing carnival games, such as the bean bag toss and the crane game. They even scanned his wristband as well so that he can get in on the fun as well.
I even got a Mommy Makeover from Blushington at the Physician’s Formula booth free of charge without a line. The makeup artist did a really great job because he brought out my eyes with the eyeshadow and chose a really great lipstick shade for my skin tone. I also liked that I did not look like a completely different person, just a glowed up version of myself. Here are more pictures below:
The Mall of The Future- 5 out of 5 stars
I am a very picky shopper who overthinks all of my purchases before I make them, so I did not make a lot of purchases at POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND. However, my son and I really enjoyed looking around at all of the beautiful and fun products at the booths. They even had a lot of snack options mixed into the boutiques (Shout out to Hippeas and Real Food from the Ground Up who gave full-sized samples of snacks to my toddler- good looking out!) All of the vendors were also very friendly!
The Pop Shop- 4 out of 5 stars
I did not get to spend that much time at the Pop Shop. I briefly watched the ThrillHer presentation, but we left because my toddler wanted to explore the colorful Beauty Carnival. I also wanted to get the complimentary mini manis but missed my chance because I came in at 11 and all the slots were full. Maybe I would spend more time there next year.
The Feed- 3.5 out of 5 stars
For food options, POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND had your typical salads and sandwiches at the food court. They also had an Asian noodle bowl as a slightly more unique option. They had food trucks outside that included lobster rolls, pizza, Greek food, ice cream, and free salad and lemonade from Wendy’s. My only critique is that for a health and wellness based event, I wish that POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND had more healthy options to choose from. I looked forward to eating more healthy but delicious entrees at POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND but couldn’t find anything that struck my eye. I had to eat food from outside after the expo. The snacks were delicious and healthy though. I hope next year they bring more healthy but delicious entree options.
VIP Lounge- N/A
I chose to only attend the General Admission on Sunday. It would have been nice to do VIP though because I would have been able to go an hour earlier, had a better spot to see celebrities at the Main Stage, and get a Gift Bag that is worth $600!
Overall Rating- 5 out of 5 stars
POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND was more than worth it! If you love celebrities, beauty, fashion, and health and wellness, you would love POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND! If you are on the fence about attending POPSUGAR PLAY/GROUND, go for it! You will not regret it!
Talk to you next time!
